Scantling

Scantling is the dimension of approved size, parts and other cross-sectional areas. It is also defined as dimension of building material and is basically the measurements of different parts of the ship especially that of framing and structural ones. Scantling explains the structural strength through girders and I-beams in a particular section and scantling length is considered as structural length of the ship.

Full Scantling Vessel, another term is commonly known as geared ship according to which it can reach all parts of its cargo space with the help of its gear.

According to DNV Rules for Classification of Ships and the IACS Common Structural Rules for Tankers and Bulk Carriers Section Scantlings is used to design ship's cross sections and transverse bulkheads. A rule check is used to check the hull girder longitudinal strength, local strength and buckling of plates and stiffeners. The Section Scantlings Program of Nauticus Hull has been established as the market leader for hull scantling design. Shear flow calculation is used in the program and the model data used is also later modified to 3D finite element models.
